Café De Living

Rudi and Els convert part of their home into a meeting place.

Discover how Rudi and Els decided to convert a large living room in their house from a notary's office into a pleasant meeting place: Café De Living. Their new pellet stove is the perfect way to create a cosy atmosphere, while heating the entire room safely and efficiently.

A former notary's office converted into a meeting place

It all started with the purchase of a large mansion originally built around 125 years ago.

Rudy and Els were looking for a house big enough for them and their four children, and they finally found it in 2014. However, the house is so large that the couple wondered whether they could convert part of it into a meeting place.

The house’s large living room, formerly used as a notary's office, became the café "De Living": a warm and welcoming space for friends, neighbours or the curious, all in a unique 19th century setting.

Pellet stove: warm atmosphere guaranteed

The space’s new function was inaugurated in May 2019. The living room, which has now been converted into a meeting place, already had an open wood-burning stove to heat the room. The problem was that regulations prohibited the extraction of air from the room for heating purposes when the room is used to receive the public.

Rudy and Els opted for a solution that met both the regulations and the new energy requirements: a sealed pellet stove. The pellet stove is installed centrally in the main room and distributes the heat into the room via the integrated convection fan. The combustion gases are exhausted to the outside via the exhaust duct, while fresh outside air is supplied to the stove via its own duct.

Ease of use and maintenance

Another factor in favour of the pellet stove was its ease of use. Gone are the days of having to add wood to the stove every hour. The pellet stove can easily last a whole day and can even be easily regulated with a thermostat.

Advice: Are you planning to install a wood/pellet stove soon? In addition to the power and efficiency of the appliance, you must also consider all aspects related to installation: number of rooms to be heated, ideal position, flue gas evacuation, etc. Ask the installer or manufacturer for personalized advice.
