Barco, a technology giant with a rich history dating back to 1934, develops visualisation and collaboration solutions for the entertainment, corporate and healthcare markets. The wide range of cutting-edge products and solutions are entirely in the spirit of Agoria's mission Improving quality of life through technology. Not only do they immerse people in lifelike immersive entertainment experiences, but modern board and meeting rooms cannot do without the Barco technology that facilitates knowledge sharing and smart decision-making in organisations. Finally, they help hospitals and physicians to provide their patients with the best possible healthcare. Barco employs some 3,600 people, operates in some 90 countries worldwide and holds 400 patents.
We spoke to Inge Arens, HR Business Partner Operations and Labour Relations at Barco, who is on the front line of the company’s transformation and the development of its talent pool. Impactful technological innovation has always been an integral part of Barco's strategy and corporate culture. It was therefore no surprise that they opted for the Research & Development commitment of the Be The Change charter. This commitment involves investing at least 20% of the R&D budget in technological solutions that enable 'remote services' in the healthcare, education and business services sectors. And that is exactly what the general public associates Barco with thanks to the hugely popular Barco ClickShare. Barco ClickShare - Wireless presentations and meetings; Barco weConnect - virtual classrooms; and Barco Demetra - smart portable skin research devices, enable remote collaboration, presentations, learning, support, relaxation and even medical diagnostics.
In line with this, Barco also took the commitment to map and reduce the number of journeys within the company. In this way, they hope to halve commuting and business trips for (internal) meetings by 2023. Covid-19 has already helped in this regard, and employees are quicker to reflect on whether it is really necessary, for example, to cause the entire team to travel abroad to attend a meeting. It goes without saying that our own product portfolio for remote meetings and collaboration is the ultimate tool for achieving this objective. Here, too, behaviour and technology form the tandem that reduces the CO2 footprint.
The Digital transformation has long been on Barco's strategic agenda. On the one hand, in a bottom-up approach: in 2021, for the fourth year in a row, 20 employees will be trained in digital transformation to act as ambassadors and foster a mindset and culture of resilience and agility to the organisation. On the other hand, in a top-down strategy: last summer, the company hired a Chief Digital & Information Officer who will steer the transformation in the right direction. This puts Barco in pole position for a future that they are actively shaping themselves with their future-ready solutions.
